It was our own personal experience that became the primary factor for starting Beck 'N Call.

We took this experience, coupled it with our business education backgrounds, and decided to provide a home health care service built on respect, trust, commitment and care. Our business has grown, but we have never forgotten where our story began.

In 1995 our family was getting deeply involved in learning what it meant to care for our elders. At that time, our family was caring for 8 seniors, over the age of 70, all with health issues of varying seriousness. Breast cancer that spread to the brain. Early through late Alzheimer's disease. Emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Heart failure. These were the biggest of the bad boys. When we looked for support in the community...none was available. We decided we could fill that void in the community and Beck 'N Call was born.

With each passing year, the challenges of caring for them grew more complex. Through the early years of Beck 'N Call, we buried a family member each year.

Together we learned how hard it was to pick up Uncle Charlie on a sunny afternoon and drive him downtown to Laurel Manor Nursing Home because his care needs exceeded what we could provide him living at home with Aunt Grace, his wife of 65 years.

We understood that quality of life matters...

...and that sometimes there is nothing else that can be done, so we learned what it meant to embrace a "hospice" philosophy. We partnered our organization that was totally about living, with an organization that is about living with a life-limiting terminal illness.

We learned what happens to a couple like Beverly's parents when they retired young, and lived 15 years longer than they expected to live. They ran out of financial resources at about age 70, but didn't pass away until their 80's. So we learned about Medical Assistance, Medicare, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and standards of care.

This "experience we gained is so important. Until you are faced with the responsibility of providing care, you will not likely understand the full impact it makes on your life. By the time you do have a great picture of how this has changed your life, you are likely exhausted from burning the candle at both ends, and now you are looking for a place to turn for help.

This is a critical and pivotal moment, frequently accompanied by some medical incident or near traumatic situation. Maybe it was a fall with an injury like my Aunt Grace. Maybe it was a small kitchen fire that could have been so much worse like Laura. Maybe it was coming home to find the back door "stuck as Uncle Charlie put it...because he didn't realize that he just pounded in about 250 nails, nailing the door shut tight.

Critical and pivotal moment... questions need to be answered.

Information needs to be collected. Details need to be worked out, and a plan needs to be set in motion. There isn't a lot time to double back and do the research.

If your loved one is in the hospital, the easiest and fastest move is from the hospital to a nursing home. Every day your loved one spends in a nursing home, makes transitioning out and coming home, or stepping down to assisted living, more of an impossibility.

The best time to begin addressing the challenges of aging family members is before the critical moment. Putting services in place, even minimal services, establishes rapport with your loved one. They settle into a comfort level and routine, building a trust and relationship with a caregiver, so they don't have to feel dependent or burdensome on you.

The gift of our own experience is what we bring to Beck 'N Call.

A gift we share freely with compassion, understanding and empathy, to all the individuals and families we have the pleasure to meet and serve along this journey.

Our own personal commitment, our professional staff and our years of experience have enabled us to form what we believe to be and what clients say is a caring, professional, and committed organization. We strive to provide the level of support necessary to help people like you and your loved ones continue to live independently in a trusting environment and in the comfort of home.
